Paddle For Life - Charity Dragon Boat Race

August 18 in Foster City, California

FOSTER CITY, California, May 21 2007 - On August 18 an event featuring athleticism, competition and charity will take place at Leo Ryan Park in Foster City. The Bay Area's finest Dragon Boat teams have come together to form Paddle For Life , a charitable organization founded to raise money for cancer research through a two-day novice Dragon Boat race. A better site could not have been chosen to host this event. With the serenity of the Foster City community and the resplendent waters of the canals, it'll be easy to fall in love with this unifying team sport.

Dragon Boating is a team paddling sport involving 20 paddlers (10 along each side), a steersperson and a drummer, racing in a long boat against several others. Dragon boating emphasizes working together with teammates to persevere and synchronize every paddle stroke to fight for the finish line. The sport originated in China, and dates back over 2000 years. In recent years it has become one of the fastest growing international sports, as exhibited by an increasing number of race festivals being held in the US, Canada, Australia, Africa, Europe and throughout Asia. Paddlers of any skill level can enjoy the sport and develop their technique in order to eventually compete on a local, national or even international level.

The spirit of the Paddle for Life race is for everyone to have fun, work as a team and raise money for a good cause. Competing teams will be composed of novice paddlers from various Bay Area corporations, community groups, gyms and cancer survivor organizations. Each corporate team must raise a minimum of $450 to enter, each non-profit team must raise $350 and any teams consisting of cancer survivors will be granted free race entry. All proceeds will be distributed equally among the American Cancer Society, the Asian American Cancer Support Network and Team Survivor. Teams will have the opportunity to practice before the race, with equipment, boats and steerspeople provided by the Bay Area Dragons, a local dragon boat team operating out of Foster City. With teams grouped into categories such as High Tech, Financial, Law Firms and Biotech, the motivation to compete should be fueled even more by a sense of friendly rivalry. But by the end of the event, the emphasis won't be on who won in each race. The real winners will be the charities benefiting from the motivation of participating members of the Bay Area community. Anyone interested in participating or sponsoring this event can visit www.paddleforlife.org for more info.
