Arizona sunshine makes for a nice weekend of dragon boat races. You’ve got teams from all around (even Taiwan), and good competition to get the season going. From my perspective things were awesome. A little more sleep would have helped, but that is beside the point. The goal here is to take a look at the Arizona race from my point of view.
We came with not quite twenty member crews for men’s, women’s and mixed races, but still managed to get in there and compete with other teams. With our 2nd place finish in Div. A (2nd overall behind San Diego) and 3rd in Div. B, I felt BAD had something in the gut of our boats left to give. I know that getting hungry for being number one is not too bad of a position for us to be in. We crave the victory, and strive towards it. I personally think I should and could have done a hundred times better. I felt the big thing that struck me right away about the races was not the competition itself, but the energy. There was excitement in the air, general happy feelings. I felt welcomed and supported by the Gila Dragons – our hosts. I loved that everywhere you went there were smiles and happy faces. The energy and spirit of this race is really what stood out to me, what still lingers when I remember those two days of racing and fun. I always feel a lot of support and encouragement from BAD paddlers, no matter where we race. It was cool to see that a firefighters team all the way from Taiwan came out to compete. The sheer will just to be there and race is impressive. Their skilled racing also put many teams to task. Besides the energy and the ambience, there was something everyone can appreciate: food. I personally was happy to score some gelato downtown on Saturday night after dinner. Dinner is nice, but dessert is better! In the long run, paddling is about teamwork and pushing to reach a greater goal each time. As a woman I can understand the push for greatness in myself, and my team. With a good start to this season of paddling, lets look forward to the greatness yet to come. Photos by Justin Lien
