2007 Redwood Shores Dragon Boat Race Print
Saturday, May 12 2007, 08:00 - 17:00

Hi BAD,

Please see below for final details on the Redwood Shores race. We've tried to consolidate all the pertinent information for you to eliminate confusion. We'll see you all bright and early at 7:30 am tomorrow morning. Get a good night's rest and let's race hard and have fun tomorrow! Go BAD!

What: 2007 Redwood Shores Dragon Boat Race
Where:
Paragon Point, Redwood City, CA
When:
May 12, 2007
Race fees:
$30, $35 if we have to hunt you down

Important notes:
  • Please arrive by 7:30 am and, if you have not done so, hand in your waiver immediately (http://www.cdba.org/documents/cdba_waiver.pdf). Give it to Alvin, Emmie, Andy, or Steve. We must have all waivers and team manifests complete before we can race.
  • You will receive a wristband for the race that means you have signed a waiver. If you do not get one, talk to Alvin, Emmie, Andy, or Steve.
  • Stay close to base camp in the morning until the racing is under way and you know your race times. It is important that everyone be on the same page at the start of the race.
  • We will be having a BBQ after the race completes (thanks Stan!)

Race site and parking:

Base Camp:
  • Thanks to Martin, Wanda, Sandra, and a whole bunch of other people for preparing our base camp. We will have water, gatorade, and other snacks available throughout the race. Also many thanks to Stan for manning the BBQ.

Race grid:
A few notes about the race grid:
  • Masters is the first race of the day, and it is the Masters final.
  • Advancement to the 2nd round is based on time, so we will be finishing hard in our first heats.
  • The first heats are also grouped by seeding. That means, BAD 1 will be racing DW 1 and DF 1 as the first mixed race, BAD 2 vs DW 2, etc.

Drummer/steerspeople/captains:
BAD 1: Emmie / Steve / Alvin
BAD 2: Felicia / Norm / Andy
BAD 3: Judy / Justin / Steve
Mens 1: Emmie / Armaan / Steve
Mens 2: Felicia / Val / Ken
Womens: Sid / Andy / Mandy
Masters: TBD / Val / Alvin

What to bring:
For those of you new to BAD, here are some suggested things to bring:
  • race waiver! (http://www.cdba.org/documents/cdba_waiver.pdf)
  • paddle and PFD (if you own one, otherwise the festival provides or you can purchase one from Alvin)
  • folding chair
  • towel
  • sunglasses and sunblock
  • change of clothes
  • water bottle
  • camera
  • any snacks you like

What to expect on race day:
For those of you new to BAD and dragon boat racing, here is what you can expect on race day:
  • Each crew has a few spares.  However, you can expect to race at least 3 times.
  • All lineups will be posted for viewing.
  • A whiteboard will show upcoming race times and heat numbers for each crew.
  • All team captains will call lineups 30 minutes prior to each race.
  • We will do a warmup and stretch prior to each race.
  • After everyone has gathered their gear, the captains will brief each crew.  After the briefing, the crew will head together down to the marshalling area for boat loading.
  • Once you load onto the boat, please settle into your seat immediately.  Listen carefully for drummer and steersperson commands.  After entering the boat, no one talks except for the drummer, steersperson, or captain.
  • Listen carefully at the start line for commands.  In windy conditions, this is very important as we may need to maneuver at the start line.
  • After the race has completed, again, please listen for drummer and steersperson commands.  The steeresperson will guide the boat back to the loading dock.
  • After exiting the boat, stay close to your crew.  We will debrief immediately following each race.
  • Have fun!
